This has been a dizzying first (official) day.

Trump declares his inauguration day as a national holiday

Trump felt that January 20th was so Yuge that we should turn it into a national holiday called the National Day of Patriotic Devotion.

nationalholiday

Excerpts from the proclamation:

A new national pride stirs the American soul and inspires the American heart. We are one people, united by a common destiny and a shared purpose. Freedom is the birthright of all Americans, and to preserve that freedom we must maintain faith in our sacred values and heritage.

Our Constitution is written on parchment, but it lives in the hearts of the American people.

There is no freedom where the people do not believe in it; no law where the people do not follow it; and no peace where the people do not pray for it.

There are no greater people than the American citizenry, and as long as we believe in ourselves, and our country, there is nothing we cannot accomplish.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 20, 2017, as National Day of Patriotic Devotion, in order to strengthen our bonds to each other and to our country — and to renew the duties of Government to the people.

Do we celebrate our nation or Trump?

Conway reverses on Trump’s tax release

Instead of her initial denial of tax return releases, she reinstated that Trump’s taxes will be release “after audits” in a new Tweet. Why does it feel like a stall tactic to calm the masses?

Women had no input in the Anti-Abortion Executive Order

I’m glad he surrounded himself with women who would voice their opinion about an executive order on their reproductive health.  See all the women above? No?

Trump’s action will reinstate the Mexico City policy that prohibit giving U.S. funds to any international organizations that offer family planning and reproductive health options.  This includes abortions but it will also limit all other family planning options in other countries.  This also signals Trump’s stance on isolating the US one step further.

Flynn and Russian connection?

More information is emerging from the on-going investigation on Russian connection to Trump’s cabinet.  One detail that is emerging is that President Trump’s pick for National Security Advisor, Mike Flynn, is being investigated for several calls between Flynn and Russian diplomats in late December.  Still on-going.

Ajit Pai for FCC may lead to privatized net traffic

Source: https://techcrunch.com/2017/01/23/trumps-fcc-chairman-pick-ajit-pai-heralds-a-weaker-meeker-commission/

Ending Net Neutrality would be a bad thing for anyone who loves using the internet. A block quote from the source above:

“Under Pai’s leadership and with a likely 3-2 Republican majority once others are appointed, the FCC will almost certainly work to strike down the Open Internet Order altogether. You can expect major players in the business to take advantage: zero-rating and bundled services will multiply, for instance, and special treatment of different “tiers” or “categories” of data rather than simple bit-by-bit caps.”

No more open internet? So, we’ll have paid privatization of some data over others? What about privacy on the net?

Who’s on @POTUS if Trump is on @realDonaldTrump?

If the President is still using his old Twitter handle of @realDonaldTrump, who’s controlling the helm at the official @POTUS account?

It seems like it may be Dan Scavino Jr. (source & source & source), Trump’s pick for Director of Social Media and former assistant/golf caddy.

Notable issues with Dan Scavino Jr:

  • Retweeted/shared conspiracy theories like 9/11 was an “inside job” carried out by the United States government, other terrorist acts on US soil were also inside jobs, Osama was a CIA asset, US government has some “weather machine” that would cause natural disasters, etc.
  • Seems to support claims by InfoWar site (fake news site)
  • Anti-vaccine and that vaccines are some part of a covert program to harm or kill children
  • Claims that Michelle Obama is a man
  • Made anti-Semitism claims during the campaign season and posted an image of Hillary Clinton with a Star of David and with the words “most corrupt candidate ever”

New bill may force utility companies to only use non-renewable energy sources

Source: http://www.salon.com/2017/01/23/not-renewable-bill-would-ban-utilities-from-using-renewable-energy/

Coal, natural gas, hydroelectric, oil, and nuclear power may rejoice but we are losing the choice of using renewable energy with Trump’s new energy bill (sponsored/lobbied by the state’s top coal producing counties).  There will be steep fines for those who try to use anything BUT coal, natural gas, hydroelectric, oil, or nuclear power.

Anglers and Hunters may hate this

This is a bit older news (by one day) but Trump has signed to end the Waters of the U.S. Rule that protect streams, brooks, wetlands, etc. that is typically supported by sportsmen groups in the U.S. (Source).  This was done under the guise of removing regulation on the energy industry:

“For too long, we’ve been held back by burdensome regulations on our energy industry. President Trump is committed to eliminating harmful and unnecessary policies such as the Climate Action Plan and the Waters of the U.S. rule. Lifting these restrictions will greatly help American workers, increasing wages by more than $30 billion over the next 7 years.”

Although we still have the Clean Water Rule, this may greatly affect drinking water sources and fish/game sources.

White House website is no longer available in Spanish

This sends a clear message about unity of the new administration and accessibility for all of the U.S.  This isn’t a surprise when, on the campaign trail, Trump criticizes Jeb Bush about using Spanish.
